George Bush and Bill Clinton are trying to get congress to allow Haiti to triple the number of exports they typically ship to the United States. Haiti ships knit and ...
... woven fabrics to the US.
Bush and Clinton believe that if they are allowed to ship more knit and woven fabrics, they will be able to attract investors as well as create thousands of new jobs. Haiti is still struggling from the huge 7.0 earthquake that struck on January 12th, which left nearly 300,000 people dead.
Former presidents Bush and Clinton are also trying to increase the trade preferences in the Haitian Hemispheric Opportunity through Partnership Encouragement Act (HOPE II) legislation from 8 to fifteen years.
The goal is to "help the people of Haiti rebuild their lives and livelihoods, but to build back better," said a spokesman for the Clinton-Bush Haiti relief effort.
